Love the Mediterranean and its commitment to the dissemination and protection of the Balearic Sea at the Marine Forum 2024

The Foro Marino (Marine Forum), in its sixth edition, has extended its activities to the four islands of the Balearic archipelago: Ibiza, Mallorca, Formentera and Menorca. With the aim of being a truly regional meeting, the Forum has brought together experts, scientists and organizations committed to the protection of the Mediterranean. As Antonio Martínez Beneyto, coordinator of the Marine Forum, has highlighted, the intention has been to add efforts, opinions and projects that help us improve the health of the Balearic Sea. Among the most notable initiatives, Love the Mediterranean has played a key role in the dissemination and protection of the sea, providing its electric sailboat, the Galaxie, as a platform for educational workshops.

On Friday, TrueWorld participated in presentations at the Marine Forum, where challenges and solutions for the Mediterranean were discussed, with a particular emphasis on the protection of Posidonia, the marine plant that plays a crucial role in carbon capture and conservation. of marine biodiversity. This year, commemorating the 25th anniversary of the declaration of Posidonia as World Heritage by UNESCO, the Forum underlined the urgency of its protection and regeneration. With the participation of speakers such as marine biologist Manu San Félix and double Olympic champion Theresa Zabell, the basis was laid for an in-depth debate on the importance of these seagrass beds and their role in the fight against climate change.

On Saturday, Love the Mediterranean, through TrueWorld, offered its Galaxie sailboat for the workshop organized by MARE. This activity, focused on the observation of Posidonia, gave participants the opportunity to understand its importance from a direct and experiential perspective. Aboard the Galaxie, participants, including young people and adults, were able to see the Posidonia meadows up close and learn about how this marine ecosystem significantly contributes to climate change mitigation, acting as a natural carbon sink. Furthermore, the workshop reinforced the need to preserve these marine spaces, which are essential to maintain ecological balance in the Mediterranean.

On Sunday, the workshop with biologist Eva García, also on board the Galaxie, allowed us to delve deeper into the vital role of posidonia in capturing CO₂ and protecting coasts against erosion. The participants, in direct contact with the ecosystem, learned first-hand the relevance of underwater meadows not only as a refuge for biodiversity, but also as an ally in the fight against the most devastating effects of climate change. This activity highlighted the importance of combining science with environmental education to foster greater awareness of the need to protect these marine ecosystems.

The Love the Mediterranean initiative reaffirms its commitment to the protection of the Balearic Sea through concrete and sustainable actions. By offering the Galaxie, a zero-emission sailing boat, for the workshops, it was demonstrated how it is possible to enjoy the natural beauty of the Mediterranean without generating negative impacts. And underlining the importance of integrating low-impact solutions, such as electric navigation, in recreational activities to disseminate and raise awareness about the sea and the protection of marine ecosystems, such as Posidonia meadows, essential to mitigate climate change.
