On April 7th, as part of the 53rd Princesa Sofía Trophy, the Environmental Day "Love The Mediterranean" took place, an event dedicated to the protection and education about marine sustainability. From 10 AM to 1 PM, this gathering brought together various organizations and the community in a joint effort to care for and preserve our Mediterranean Sea.
One of the highlights of the day was the creation of workshops designed to educate marginalized social sectors about environmental issues related to the Mediterranean Sea. Thanks to the participation of the Hadas Kids and Projecte Jove foundations, educational opportunities were provided to children and young people, empowering them with knowledge about marine conservation and sustainable practices.
During the regatta, the Palma Aquarium Foundation held its workshop "Treasures of the Mediterranean and the Rescue of Protected Marine Wildlife Trapped by Ghost Nets and Other Debris." This workshop offered a deep understanding of the problems caused by marine debris and taught the protocols for rescuing affected wildlife, promoting awareness and action in favor of the environment.
The Cleanwave Foundation conducted its Citizen Science Workshop in collaboration with #ObservadoresdelMar. Here, the density of waste per square meter in different quadrants was analyzed, which allows the collection of vital data for specialists while encouraging citizen participation in scientific research and the formulation of impactful strategies.
Additionally, the Mar de Fondo project connected attendees with the regatta area of the Princesa Sofía Trophy, explaining the competition categories and the sports modalities present. Information was provided about the history of the event and the importance of practicing nautical sports responsibly, highlighting the value of education and environmental awareness.
For the monitoring of the regatta, the vessels Stenella and BlueCircle were made available, which also served to complement the experiences and workshops, demonstrating a commitment to sustainable and responsible sporting activities.
Furthermore, for the third consecutive year, TRUEWORLD Organization calculated the event's carbon footprint. This effort reinforces the importance of measuring and mitigating the environmental impact of our actions, promoting a culture of sustainability among attendees.
The Environmental Day "Love The Mediterranean" aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4, which seeks to ensure inclusive and quality education, and SDG 14, focused on the conservation and sustainable use of oceans and marine resources. It also aligned with the #RacetoZero campaign, underscoring our commitment to low-carbon sporting activities.
This event was made possible thanks to the effort and dedication of individuals like Paul Gehrig, Toni Mora Massutí, Francesca Luculano, Pilar Gómez, Marco Magazzù, and Ferran Muniesa Triay. Their work and passion allow us to continue advancing our mission to protect the Mediterranean and foster a more conscious and active society in the conservation of our marine environment.
Let's Keep Loving the Mediterranean! The Environmental Day "Love The Mediterranean" was not only a significant event but also a reminder of our shared responsibility. Let's continue working together to protect and celebrate our sea, inspiring future generations to follow our example.
